(ECNS) -- A teacher from Nanping City in southeast China's Fujian Province is thought to have gone missing during her solo journey in Japan, and her family is in urgent need of any leads, Southern Metropolis Daily reported.

Wei Qiujie, 27, arrived alone in Japan's northernmost island Hokkaido on July 18 and lost contact with her family since July 22. She was supposed to return to China on July 25.

Wei left her luggage at a hostel in Sapporo. The hostel operator reported to Japanese police that Wei was possibly missing.

A staff member from the Chinese Consulate-General in Sapporo said they had contacted local police and that an investigation was ongoing, but it remains unclear where Wei was last seen.

Wei taught Chinese language at an elementary school in Nanping and was popular among students and teachers, according to Chinese newspaper Global Times.
