(ECNS) -- Over 1,700 shared bikers were caught violating traffic rules in southern Shenzhen, Guangdong Province in 10 days, Nanfang Daily reported.
Non-motor vehicles are forbidden on motorways in China. As there are no bike-only lanes in Shenzhen, traffic violations increased after shared bikes became popular.
Local traffic police recorded 13,615 cases of non-motor vehicles in breach of provisions governing road passage laws and regulations from July 1 to 9.
Among 3,260 cases, 1,717 included shared bikes of start-ups Mobike and Ofo.
Police have demanded these companies ban on transgressors from using shared bikes between July 17 to 23 as punishment. Shenzhen is thought to be the first city in China to deliver such a penalty.
Most cases were found to occur during morning and evening rush hours, with 23.76 percent from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 20.35 percent from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.. Male cyclists accounted for 71.29 percent.
Shenzhen police have pledged to act tough on shared bike users, calling on companies to share whatever information they can with authorities to enhance administration capacity.
