(ECNS) -- All online platforms offering live-streaming services in China are required to register with a relevant authority starting July 15, according to a directive issued by the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC).

The directive is aimed to further curb irregularities in live online video streaming and strengthen effective management.

According to the new rule, internet service providers allowing users to post live videos from smartphones or webcams must complete the registration process within 30 days or face penalties.

Since 2016, attempts have been made in China to rein in the sector and ban illegal content that don't adhere to social conventions on the Internet, urging platforms to help promote healthy behaviors, according to the CAC.

This year, the administration has worked alongside other ministries to shut down 73 live-streaming platforms, blacklist 1,879 rule-breaking video program hosts, and delete 50 million harmful comments, it was added.
