(ECNS) -- The Danish Embassy in China has welcomed an overwhelming number of suggestions from Chinese netizens to control the invading oysters on its beaches, but said it will not offer a free trip for Chinese oyster lovers.
The embassy ditched its usually conventional diplomatic language on its Weibo account, saying "oysters mushroom on coastal beaches, but the Danish are not delighted at all." The new species known as the pacific oyster has grown so fast that it surpasses the local species, harming the ecological environment, it was added.
The post went viral on the microblogging platform as oysters are considered a delicacy. In less than three days, the post was forwarded 11,811 times, received 6,180 likes and got 11,838 comments.
Chinese netizens have offered a range of helpful suggestions, such as calling for companies to import oysters from Denmark and organizing package tours to eat the oysters. China's e-commerce company JD.com suggested opening an online store and promised that the oysters would sell out in minutes.
Beijing Youth Daily reported that a netizen called the embassy to ask if a free trip to the country could be arranged for oyster-hungry tourists. The embassy responded by saying there is no such service on offer.
The embassy did welcome Chinese tourists to Denmark, and encouraged them to enjoy more than just eating oysters while there.
