(ECNS) -- Shanghai plans to adopt face-scanning and fingerprint identification technology in all its public rental housing programs to enhance management and prevent abuse.

With house prices soaring, the government has rolled out public housing for low income families in cities. But some renters sublet the housing unit or allow others to live there once they rent it.

Pudong District in Shanghai has piloted intelligent management of its public housing project Renwen Apartments by using face scanning for door access. When the method does not work well on rainy days or in dim light, tenants can scan their fingerprints instead.

The apartment has since reported no subletting or other malpractice.

The Shanghai Municipal Commission of Construction and Urban-Rural Development said in its 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-2020) that new access methods would be applied comprehensively in all public rental housing projects.
