(ECNS) -- Steak processed from minced beef and additives such as carrageenan are safe to eat, local media in Yunnan cited experts from China Food and Drug Administration as saying.
Carrageenan is not allowed in fresh meat but can be used in processing if it's clearly marked on the food label, according to the experts. It does not pose food safety threats, it was added.
Prices for beefsteak vary widely depending on the processing methods, ranging from about 10 yuan ($1.4) per 100 grams for a reprocessed cut up to hundreds of yuan for the pure original.
Reprocessed cuts are usually made of qualified minced meat and food additives such as soybeans, seasonings and carrageenan that makes sure liquids remain mixed.
But experts warn consumers to fully cook reprocessed steak because the production process could breed bacteria.
