(ECNS) -- A former Shenzhen customs officer involved in a corruption case was caught after 16 years at large, having revealed his identity while shopping online.

The suspect surnamed Jing used to work at Shekou Customs in the city, according to Nanfang Metropolis Daily.

He was suspected of receiving bribes worth millions of yuan for helping smugglers export garlic in 1994. He managed to escape when investigators contacted him in 2000.

During the past few years, Jing has cut all connections with his family while hiding in north China's Shaanxi Province, using an alias and running a photo shop.

Police finally traced him in October after he used his true name to buy camera equipment online.

Jing was then arrested and taken back to Shenzhen for further investigation.

Since the launch of a fugitive hunt at the beginning of 2015, the Shenzhen procuratorate has apprehended 29 fleeing suspects, including 18 from abroad. The longest running fugitive has been hiding for 19 years.
