(ECNS) -- Drivers who use interruptive high-beam lights on Shenzhen's streets will be punished by police by having to stare into the lights themselves, despite getting fined and receiving penalty points, Guangzhou-based Express News reported.

The enforcement operation swept Chinese social media on Tuesday, sparking online discussion about whether the punishment should be popularized across the country.

Some Weibo users support the punishment, saying drivers who wantonly use high-beam headlights should feel for themselves the dizziness caused by the bright, long-range illumination, which is really dangerous for those coming from the opposite direction.

Others question the legitimacy of the move, since no law in China prescribes such a punishment.
