(ECNS) -- A 2,500-year-old town in Hefei, capital of East China's Anhui Province, has suffered the most severe flooding in 25 years following days of rainstorms, Beijing Times reports.

Water levels in Sanhe Town, a national 5A scenic spot and close to Hangbang River, rose four to five meters in recent days.

The town got its name because of the Fengle, Xiaonan and Hangbang rivers that flow through it, and which also make it vulnerable to flooding.

In 1991, Sanhe was almost destroyed in summer floods.

Precipitation in many areas of Hefei broke historic records, with the water level of Chao Hu River and its eight branches, including the Fengle, Hangbang and Xihe rivers, all exceeding warning lines and still on the rise, the report said.

Tang Chuanxin, party secretary of Feixi County, said local water conservancy and flood prevention facilities were outdated as the sluice gate was established 26 years ago. Despite that, "problems were addressed timely and did not result in catastrophe", he noted.

The official added that measures were taken to protect the nearly 100,000 people in Sanhe and its surrounding region.
