(ECNS) -- An official with China's meteorological authority said on Wednesday that it is technically impossible to predict extreme weather changes half a month or even 10 days in advance.

Weather forecasting needs to be scientific and from authoritative sources using real-time data due to its importance in people's lives, Zheng Guoguang, director of China Meteorological Administration, said at a press conference held by State Council Information Office.

Meteorological institutes have diversified the outlets they use to communicate weather information to reach as many people as possible such as mobile apps or loudspeakers in villages, according to Zheng.

He said with current technology it is nearly impossible to make a detailed forecast about the location, time and intensity of extreme weather months or even ten days in advance.

It's both irresponsible and illegal to spread false information about extreme weather, he added.

A number of regions, including Jiujiang City in Jiangxi Province and Zhangjiajie City in Hunan Province, have reported the spread of false weather information about impending rainstorms or floods.
