(ECNS) -- In a course at Nanjing Agricultural University, the physical education department is grading overweight students based on the weight they lose, China National Radio reports.

Zhou Quanfu, who teaches the course "Exercise for less fat," said being overweight not only affects students' grades in sports courses but also dampens their self-confidence and mental health.

He began to design the course after tests for 18 overweight and obese students proved to be effective.

Students in the course have to take three to four sports classes each week for six weeks. They need to complete programs in jogging, speed walking, sit-ups and planking as well as follow a healthy diet.

The number of those in the course that officially started last year increased from 26 to 36 in the first session. A student said the innovative program is fun, keeps the body fit, and also helps students gain confidence.
