(ECNS) -- Chinese students are advised to consider majors beyond business and management while pursuing an advanced education in Australia, australiaplus.cn reported.

Huang Wenyong, an expert on study in Australia, said statistics from the Department of Immigration and Border Protection of Australian show more than half of Chinese students choose to study business, management and media programs there, with concentration on finance and accounting.

The preference for such majors may affect the career prospects of Chinese students as job competition will be hot and the chances to stay in Australia after graduation become slim, Huang told the website produced by Australian Broadcasting Corp.

Huang suggested that Chinese students become informed of immigration policy changes and choose majors that could lead to an occupation on the Australian government's "Skilled Occupations List."

Teachers of kindergarten kids and middle school students, engineers in civil, mechanical and chemical fields, system analysts, software engineers and network engineers for the computer industry, lawyers, as well as architects, designers and property appraisers in the real estate sector are all included on the list.

Huang added that lawyers, health professionals and agroforestry specialists are also in hot demand.

Students should consider the overall ranking of Australian universities and schools but also the distinctive strengths of certain programs during their application, it was noted.
