(ECNS) -- Beijing Capital International Airport has officially started offering female-only security check lanes after a three-month test run, Beijing Youth Daily reported on Wednesday.

The airport has opened female-only security lanes at airport departure check-in areas in three terminals (T1, T2, and T3), the report said.

The newly opened service aims to protect privacy, as female passengers often carry items that can be embarrassing for male security personnel to check, a security officer explained.

In addition, Civil Aviation Security Check Regulations specify that "Pat-down procedures should be completed by officers of the same sex; when the traveler is a woman, only female officers can carry out the check."

The expanded new service aims to also help speed up security checks at the airport, which is one of the world's busiest, the report said.

Several other airports in China, including Shanghai Pudong Airport, reserve lanes for male passengers to improve the speed of security checks, as they carry less items, the report said.
