(ECNS) -- Two Chinese geese became social media stars after a photo of their "intimate farewell" went viral, but that has not spared them from the chopping block, the Modern Express reports.

In the picture, a gander appears to stand up straight to kiss a goose, which is tied to the backseat of a motorcycle in a village in Meizhou City, South China's Guangdong Province.

The picture was forwarded more than 18,000 times two days after being posted on Weibo and generated hot discussions.

The picture also inspired many netizens to come up with different versions of the fate of the animals. One popular version saw the motorcycle overturned on the road and the two animals lived together happily, parenting many goslings.

However, the truth is another story.

Deng said her parents raised the geese for a year and gave one to their relatives during the Spring Festival celebration. Both geese have already been cooked.

Deng said she hoped netizens would understand that the birds had lived out their purposes in life.
