(ECNS) -- A 42-year-old man has a finger back lost 13 years ago following successful surgery that transplanted one of his toes onto his damaged hand.

Liu, a native of Chuzhou city in east China's Anhui Province, accidentally severed his left index finger while operating machinery and was unable to recover it at the time.

He saw hope this December after hearing about a marvelous transplant technique.

Xie Zhenjun, a doctor at Henan Provincial People's Hospital, took the second toe on Lui's left foot and transplanted it during four hours of surgery on Dec 21.

The doctor said the restored finger is healthy and expects it to function well in two months.

Looking at his toe-turned-finger, Liu said "It's simply unbelievable."

Xie urged patients with finger or limb injures to get treated as early as possible to enhance the chances of successful restoration.
