(ECNS) -- A farmer surnamed Zang discovered a huge underground karst cave when digging a well at his home in Qixian County, central China's Henan Province.
The cave lies 20 meters under the ground, with a natural passage of 300 meters. Stalactites and stalagmites inside are well preserved, with some having taken the shape of coral and lotuses.
Zang said he had been digging the well for over eight years, but still found no water. He reached the cave, which he first thought was an ancient tomb, after excavating some damp earth in September.
According to the county's official records, a similar karst cave measuring 1,200 meters long was found two kilometers away from Zang's home in 1976. It's still unclear whether the two caves are connected.
Experts say most of the karst caves sit on hillsides and that underground ones are rare to see.
