(ECNS) -- Southwest China's Chongqing municipality plans to develop a Three Gorges national park in the next five years, Chongqing Morning Post reported on Monday.
Zhang Hong, deputy head of Chongqing's forestry administration, told the newspaper that the core of the national park would be composed of mountains, rivers and the Three Gorges reservoir region.
Earlier this year, development of the park and the protection of bio-diversity in the region were included in Chongqing's government work report, delivered at the annual sessions of local legislators and advisory members. [Special coverage]
The city has drafted a preliminary plan for developing the park, and will kick off efforts within the year, Zhang said. In addition to the functions of a nature reserve, the park would also facilitate scientific research, tourism and leisure, alongside educational services, it was added.
The Three Gorges Dam spans the Yangtze River and is currently the world's largest hydropower facility.
