(ECNS) - A man who earns about 3,000 yuan ($490) per month as a loader at a logistics company has lived in a cave for six months to save 100 yuan in rent money, which he sends to his family, the Jinan Times reported.

Shi Zhiyong, 35, from Doufuying village of Handan city in Hebei province, began working in Jinan, Shandong province, five years ago. He has two sons, ages 11 and 6, along with a wife and parents who all need support in his hometown.

One year ago he took the job of loading goods for a logistics company, with a salary of 3,000 yuan and free meals during the daytime.

Shi thought 100 yuan for rent was too much, and eventually found a cave located in a hill. It was covered by tombs and required considerable effort to enter.

About two meters high and 10 meters long, the cave was built in the 1960s for military use, without water or electricity. The walls in the cave have been blackened by smoke, and Shi's belongings include a radio, flashlight, bottles, and shabby bedding that he has salvaged.

Shi says he washes his face and hair in the office building where he works, and takes showers in the public bathhouse once a month.

His salary goes mostly to his cell phone, and the rest he sends back to his family.

Since he started living in the cave, Shi has become accustomed to the presence of rats, as well as strangers who shout at him to go away, including two men who may have been engaged in a romantic tryst.
