(ECNS) - Endangered black storks have been spotted in a river in Yichang, a city in central China's Hubei province.

Using long-focus lenses, photographers found eight black storks (four adults and four juveniles) near the Ju River.

Local fishermen said they had found the large wading birds, which are about 100 cm in length, near the river since last November.

A local authority official named Zhao Xuejun, secretary general of the Birds Association in Yichang, confirmed that they were black storks, after looking at the photos.

Among 2,000 black storks in the world, about 1,000 are in China under government protection.
