(ECNS) – China's online streaming websites must abide by the same requirements regarding content as traditional media, a senior official said on Tuesday.

Cai Fuchao, head of the State General Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television, made the remarks in a keynote speech at the second China Internet Audio-Visual Conference in Chengdu, Sichuan province.

Cai said online video sites must not pursue economic profit while sacrificing spiritual values or playing to low, vulgar tastes.

"We will insist on coherent requirements for online and offline content. In the sphere of public communication, legal rules and moral principles are the bottom line to which we should hold," he said.

Cai, who is also vice head of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, urged online video and audio sites to establish a sound content management process with clear accountability.

As of July this year, China's online video audience reached 439 million, more than 70 percent of all Chinese Internet users. The mobile phone video audience surpassed 300 million.
