(ECNS) -- Australian police said no Chinese citizens were involved in the hostage crisis that occurred at a cafe in central Sydney on Monday.

The siege began Monday morning when an armed man showing Islamic flags took dozens of people hostage. Three people were killed, including the gunman, according to police.

The Chinese Consulate General in Sydney expressed condolences to the victims. It also said police had confirmed that no Chinese citizens were involved.
