(ECNS) -- A fashion designer said she was disappointed by fake hoodies worn by Alibaba employees ahead of Singles' Day sales, Beijing News reported.
A few photos released online late on Monday showed groups of Tmall employees in fake Ji Cheng designer hoodies, posing in anticipation of the annual online shopping frenzy.
The real deal sells for 999 yuan ($163) via the JI CHENG Tmall store, while a fake sells at between 80 yuan to 300 yuan at other stores on the online platform.
Ji Cheng wrote an open letter to Jack Ma, Alibaba founder, questioning the fake products going public. "I was confused whether Tmall backs designers like me or publicly support fakes," Ji said in her letter.
She said that a Tmall representative has apologized to her via phone, and subsequently bought legal copies at her store. However, Ji still believes Tmall and MA should make official apologies to the independent design industry.
Yan Qiao, a director at Tmall's public relations department, on Wednesday evening said the fake hoodies were purchased by Cainiao Network Technology Co., of which Jack Ma is the president and Tmall accounts for 43 percent of total shares.
Cainiao also apologized to Ji Cheng via an online statement, and said it would support the desginer's appeal to legal rights.
Alibaba Singles' Day sales totaled 57.1 billion yuan ($9.32 billion) on Tuesday, busting 2013's record high of 36.2 billion yuan.
