(ECNS) – Perfect World Co., Ltd, a leading online game developer and operator in China, has signed an agreement with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to promote global cultural exchanges.
Jacques Rao, director of UNESCO's Division of Relations with Member States and International Organizations, and Vivien Wang, vice president of Perfect World, co-signed the agreement on October 28, while UNESCO President Hao Ping attended the ceremony at UNESCO's headquarter in Paris.
Since Hao became president of the 37th session of UNESCO, Chinese institutions and companies have been playing an increasingly active role in its various programs. These governmental and non-governmental institutions and commercial groups are using their actions to spread the belief that "peace is most precious," which is upheld by China all the time.
UNESCO is dedicated to building a framework to facilitate peace and cultural dialogue in order to achieve cultural harmony. The project between Perfect World and UNESCO, based on mutual trust and understanding, aims to promote world peace, safety and sustainable development through cultural dialogue.
After Hao took the post at UNESCO, China's cultural exchanges with the rest of the world have been taking on more diversified forms. This October, UNESCO, along with the China World Peace Foundation and the Beijing International Peace and Culture Foundation, launched a project to send China's Shaolin kung fu masters to Africa. The project provided professional kung fu training to young people, teaching them self-control and problem-solving through peaceful means. The innovative way of spreading the value of peace proved more effective than preaching, and was applauded by young people in Mali and Cote D'Ivoire.
UNESCO is also deepening cooperation with local governments and institutions in China. It has held an Internet meeting about "creative cities" in Chengdu, set up a Silk Road Cultural Center together with Xi'an, and signed a memorandum of understanding on education with Shenzhen.
In a recent interview with China's state-owned Xinhua News Agency at the UN's headquarters in New York, UNESCO Director-General Irina Gueorguieva Bokova said China has been providing a large amount of support to UNESCO, and that she's proud of its contributions to culture, education and science.
The cultural exchange project between Perfect World and UNESCO has supported China's active participation in the international organization. Jacques Rao praised Perfect World's generous donation at the signing ceremony, saying it was another symbol of China's cooperation with UNESCO, and represented a new beginning for the organization as its 70th anniversary approaches.
Hao said he hoped Perfect World would take part in more activities held by the organization, and establish more cooperation on different levels.
As China's comprehensive power is growing, more and more officials from the country are taking leadership posts in international organizations, including the UN and the World Bank.
