Toronto (CNS) -- The Chinese Embassy in Canada has condemned the shooting in Ottawa on Wednesday and warned Chinese nationals to stay alert.

A gunman attacked Canada's parliament, firing shots near where Prime Minister Stephen Harper was speaking and killing a soldier at a nearby war memorial.

The Chinese Embassy's spokesman condemned the parliament shooting and expressed condolences to the victim's family during a speech the same day.

In a statement issued in Chinese on its website, the embassy has reminded Chinese nationals, students and tourists to be alert and ensure personal safety.
