Taipei (CNS) – A 13-meter-tall statue of Guan Yu (or Guandi), one of China's best known historical figures, was erected in Taiwan's Taoyuan county on Sunday.
With a 600kg copper sword in hand, the statue is the tallest Guan Yu statue on the island and stands near a temple on Hutou Mountain.
Guan Yu was a general in the late Eastern Han dynasty. His deeds and moral qualities are lionized in the historical novel "Romance of the Three Kingdoms."
He is respected as the epitome of loyalty and righteousness, and many Chinese people worship statues or images of him.
Wu Chih-yang, the county leader, said the statue is filled with hopes and blessings for Taoyuan and its residents.
