(ECNS) -- Revelations that a commercial aircraft in China was unable to land because an air traffic controller was asleep has stirred heated debate among netizens, according to cn.chinadaily.com.cn.

An internal investigation of the incident released by bbs.carnoc.com was not meant to go public, but was leaked Monday.

According to the report, Flight MU2528 from Sanya, Hainan province, couldn't make contact with a local tower when it approached Wuhan on the evening of July 8. It was forced to circle for 12 minutes until contact could be made.

Local civil aviation authorities said it was caused by human error.

The news has raised concerns among Chinese netizens about the safety of domestic flights, given the frequent air accidents this year. Others argued that the risk of flight go-arounds is very low, and that exposure of the internal report did nothing but arouse unnecessary panic.

"Over 50 percent of airports in the US have no controllers to command take offs and landings," a netizen verified as a civil pilot commented on Sina Weibo.
