(ECNS) – As gun ownership is heavily regulated by Chinese law, military enthusiasts are looking overseas to purchase guns, posing a potential risk to public safety.
Police in Jiangsu province learned in July that some gun enthusiasts were actively engaged in an online forum at a foreign website that trades guns and ammunition.
With the Youth Olympic Games approaching, Jiangsu police have launched a crackdown on illegal guns, capturing 19 violators, 20 guns, 1,363 pieces of ammunition and some accessories.
According to the police, most of the violators are military enthusiasts who bought guns for their personal collections.
Last week police confiscated a high pressure air gun that can fire a bullet at a speed of 220 meters per second, and generate 123 Joules of energy per square centimeter.
"Our national standard stipulates that a gun should be banned if its lethality exceeds 1.8 Joules per centimeter. With a lethality 70 times higher, this air gun could be very dangerous," said Jiangsu police officer Zhou Weiliang.
