(ECNS) – China's consumers of luxury goods will soon be faced with a consumption tax, a high-ranking official has announced.

Jia Kang, head of the Finance Ministry's Financial Science Institute, said a taxation reform plan will be released to levy tax on environment-damaging commodities such as batteries and luxury goods, including private jets and yachts.

The consumption tax will be shared by both central and local governments.

According to the plan, the tax on some goods, such as finished oil, will be levied on sales rather than the production process.

Industry experts and wealthy jet buyers have voiced their opposition, saying private jets aren't only a luxury good, but a means of transportation.
