(ECNS) – Online photos showing several young models in bikinis wearing Min opera-style hairdos have been criticized by many netizens, the Fuzhou Evening News reported.
The photos were posted by a Weibo user who said they were taken at a small modeling show in Fuzhou.
Most netizens were angry about the mix and match, saying it desecrated the traditional opera art.
One poster, Ningmengdeyan, said applying Min opera elements into a bikini show might be creative, but had very limited positive influence on traditional art, and hoped related departments would pay attention to these dissenting voices and do more to protect traditional art.
A designer at the show said the mix and match was intended to present a blend of the modern and the classic. It wasn't intended to offend opera fans, the designer added.
Min opera is one of the major traditional opera forms in Fujian province. It is popular in large parts of the province where Fuzhou dialect is spoken, as well as in Taiwan and Malay Archipelago.
