Astronomers observe hypervelocity star with LAMSOST

(CNS) – A research team composed of astronomers from China and the United States has found a hypervelocity star traveling at 1.7 million kilometers per hour with the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMSOST).

Hypervelocity stars have great velocities that may exceed the escape velocity of the Milky Way galaxy. Astronomers said observation of these stars helps them study situations around black holes, and also learn about distributions of dark matter and the nature of dark matter halos.

In the past twenty years, scientists have discovered some 20 hypervelocity stars.

Though the newly discovered one, dubbed LAMOST-HVS1, is the closest to Earth, it is still some 40,000 light-years away.

The LAMSOST, also known as the Guo Shoujing Telescope, is one of the largest telescopes in the world, and located at the Xinglong Observation Station of the National Astronomical Observatories of China.

Guo Shoujing (1231-1316) was a Yuan Dynasty scientist.
