(ECNS) – A man was taken into police custody on Sunday after officers in Shanghai found two naval artillery shells in his car trunk.

Around 2 pm, police detected two tube-shaped objects in the trunk as the car passed through a security checkpoint in Xicen Town of Shanghai's Qingpu district.

An initial check found no wires or ammunition inside the shells, which have the Chinese character "sha" on them, meaning "kill."

The owner told police he got them as gifts from relatives.
