(ECNS) – A doctor in Chaozhou, Guandong province, was forced by dozens of people to march in shame around his hospital on Wednesday afternoon, the Guangzhou Daily reported.

The people shouted "this doctor has killed a patient" during a half-hour walk around Chaozhou Central Hospital as the doctor wept.

On Tuesday night, the doctor had taken charge of an emergency surgery on a comatose patient with acute alcoholism. After several hours of treatment, the patient was declared dead early Wednesday morning, according to Chaozhoudaily.com.

Relatives of the patient questioned the cause of death and claimed that something had gone wrong during the rescue process. They rallied dozens of people to come to the hospital at about 1 pm on Wednesday.

Police arrived after receiving a call to control the situation. By 8 pm the hospital had gone back to normal.

Two main suspects in the incident have given themselves up to police, and the case is pending.

Doctor-patient tension in China has continued to increase in recent years.
