Shaoguan (ECNS) – A golden retriever at the world natural heritage site Danxia Mountain scenic spot in Shaoguan, Guangdong province, has been in the spotlight for playing the role of a "sanitation worker" and picking up trash from the river.
The dog's owner, surnamed Ou, said his 7-year-old pet Huangdou started picking up trash from Jinjiang River several years ago.
"A couple of years ago, I found it often lying by Jinjiang River. Whenever it saw trash on the river, it would jump in and bring it to the riverbank," Ou said.
On Thursday, a curious tourist tried to test Huangdou and threw "trash" into the river after getting permission from a staffer there. The dog, not surprisingly, passed the first two tests. On the third test, Huangdou picked the trash up but "hid" it under a tree instead of bringing it down to the bank.
"It's smart enough to recognize that someone was throwing the trash repeatedly and hid it," said Hong Jadgui, general manager at the scenic site. "It touches us, and shames those who litter."
Danxia Mountain, put on the World Heritage List in 2010, is famous for its Danxia landform, made from red sandstone and characterized by curvaceous cliffs.
