(ECNS)-- A 30-year-old woman got blood cancer from excessive hair coloring, the Yangtze Evening Post reported on Wednesday.

She used to color her hair every three months, before she was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia by doctors at Zhongda Hospital Southeast University in Nanjing, Jiangsu province, said Gao Chong, an associate chief physician at the hospital.

"It is benzene contained in hair dye that contributed to the patient's disease," Gao said.

Benzene is an organic chemical compound with the molecular formula C6H6. The World Health Organization (WHO) points out that benzene increases the risk of cancer and other illnesses.

Another case in point is a male patient who got leukemia at the age of 20, Gao said.

"The young man had been exposed to benzene for a long time, since he worked as a painter," said Gao, who added that the benzene content in paint is very high.

Taiwan's legendary singer Frankie Kao died from blood cancer at the age of 63 in Taipei on Monday.

Doctors in Taiwan have some doubt about Kao's cancer being linked to his excessive hair coloring.
