A live chicken tied to a board is used as a target.
Two tourists are shooting the arrows with several others watching around.
(ECNS) – An archery range at a scenic spot in Yongjia, a county in Zhejiang province, has come under fire for using live chickens as targets, according to zjol.com.cn.
Tourists can pay 10 yuan to shoot two arrows, the range owner said, and anyone who gets a bull's eye on the target or hits a live chicken wins a live chicken as a prize.
Using live chickens as targets has been around for several years, and quite a number of tourists have tried it, the owner added.
A tourist surnamed Cai said using live chickens was "brutal" and animal abuse.
Some citizens also worried about direct contact with live chickens as bird flu has emerged in parts of China.
A director for Wenzhou Green Eyes, a local environmental protection group, said the conduct constituted animal abuse and should be condemned.
Animal abuse is banned in over 100 countries and regions, Hong Kong and Taiwan included. But the Chinese mainland hasn't introduced such laws yet.
