On a billboard in Jiangsu province's Nanjing city,"荡起梦想" (fly my dreams) was translated into Pinyin as "dangqi dream."
(ECNS) -- Public service advertising posters in Nanjing city, mocked by netizens for displaying the Pinyin of Chinese words instead of real translations, are the work of a translation software, Nanjing-based Jinling Evening News reported.
The newspaper reported that billboards promoting the China Dream along Zhongshan South Road in Jiangsu province's Nanjing city displayed some ludicrous translations.
For example, "圆我梦想" (to realize my dream) in the posters was literally translated into "round my dream," while the English version of "荡起梦想" (fly my dreams) was translated into Pinyin as "dangqi dream."
Such translations have drawn derisive responses from netizens on Sina Weibo, a micro blog service in China like Twitter. A netizen even wondered whether it was a deliberate trick to draw attention.
Runmei Brand Union, the advertising company, admitted that its careless staff made the mistake, as they just resorted to the online translation software. A manager surnamed Han said the posters were put up four or five days before Spring Festival, adding that "We faced a large amount of workload at the end of the year, so we rushed to print the posters without checking."
Han said he will arrange staffers to replace the posters and will seek help from professional translators.
Pinyin is the Romanization of the Chinese language and shows the tone marks.
