(ECNS)-- The official Sina Weibo account of a government agency in Nanjing, Jiangsu province, has been criticized as a "phantom account" by netizens since it released only one post after being launched on Jan 3, Yangtze Evening Post reported on Sunday.
On the homepage of the Nanjing Municipal Development and Reform Commission account, there is only one opening notice.
In the following 20 days, no government information was posted.
"After learning the commission launched its Weibo account, I followed it immediately," said a Nanjing resident surnamed Liu. "However, I was disappointed by the account since there was no updated information."
Even though there was only one post on it, the account still won over 160 followers.
Official Weibo accounts of government organs should serve as a bridge linking policy makers and the public, not just a form to show the government's commitment to making government affairs transparent, said Wu Xiang, an associate professor at Nanjing Xiaozhuang University.
If the Weibo account can't provide updated government information to the public, it will have a negative effect on the department's image, Wu added.
An official from the commission responded that the agency opened the account under the direction of the municipal publicity office, and the account was still in its trial operation stage.
The department is now seeking Web editors to manage the Weibo account, the official added.
