(ECNS) – A high school girl asked netizens to help support a white lie she told about eating vegetables for smog poisoning, and over 16,000 netizens helped her, the Beijing Times reported.
The help seeker, surnamed Hu, from Zhangzhou, Fujian province, said she told her 9-year-old younger sister that smog can poison people, and was asked what to do if poisoned.
"Considering she hates vegetables, I told her eating them can prevent poisoning, but she doubted it and tried to find answers on the Internet," Hu said.
Hu posted the question, "What if people get poisoned with smog?" on Baidu Knows, a question-and-answer service on Baidu, and published a Weibo post asking netizens to help her support her lie.
Millions of netizens joined in, and over 16,000 answers were provided to help the younger sister eat her vegetables. Some of the answers were given by nutrition experts.
Gu Zhongyi, a freelance nutrition expert at Baidu Knows, also participated in the discussion, and said eating vegetables can mitigate the harm caused by smog to people's health.
"Some fine particulate matters can be breathed into lungs and flow into the bloodstream, causing oxidative stress injury, but antioxidants from vegetables can help combat the injury."
Hu said theses answers did help, and her sister ate all her vegetables the next day.
