(ECNS) -- With many seagulls flying to Southwest China's Kunming for the winter, citizens called a local newspaper saying that some tourists are mistreating the seagulls, some even catching them with a paper bag, Yunnan.com reported.

Photos taken by a citizen on Monday show two women covertly taking a gull away. A young woman catches a seagull and puts it into a paper bag, while another comes forward to hide her.

Another citizen, Liu Zhen, took photos of a man grabbing a gull violently with his hand on Monday. An angry Liu said the man even screamed at the seagull when Liu discouraged him from mistreating the gull.

A birds association in Kunming said some people grab the gulls to take photos, but once their wings are injured, they can't fly, and they may even starve to death.

The city's wild animal protection office hoped each citizen could shoulder the responsibility of protecting the gulls and call 110 if they see any mistreatment.

Tens of thousands of seagulls fly to Kunming from Siberia to spend the winter each year since 1985, local media reported.
