(ECNS) -- A beggar in Shaanxi province who has pretended to be handicapped was recently caught by local citizens, but he showed zero shame for his deception, a report on Shaanxi-based Hsw.cn said.

Around 40 years old with tousled hair and ragged clothes, the man has been seen lying on his stomach on a piece of wood, wheeling himself around the streets of urban Xi'an, capital of Shaanxi.

Recently, a 77-year-old woman put one yuan ($0.16) into his money box and asked whether he needed help. Not long after, another senior woman touched his legs and discovered that he was not paralyzed. Several citizens then gathered around, criticizing him for cheating. Some called the police.

When the police arrived the beggar stood up with ease and lit a cigarette, much to the irritation of passers-by.

He was taken to the police station and released the next day after promising not to pretend to be crippled in his future begging career.

Police officers said beggars sometimes dress up in rags and pretend to have physical disabilities to exploit people's kindness.
