(ECNS) – A 24-year-old woman suffering from uremia has been found guilty of fraudulently obtaining medical insurance worth 420,000 yuan (US$68,880) with forged medical records and invoices, and 16 people have also been convicted of assisting her, according to rednet.cn.
On Sept 12, 2013, Nie Shuihua was sentenced to six years in prison and fined 100,000 yuan (US$16,400) for fraud. Her brother, Nie Zhijun, was sentenced to three years with a fine of 5,000 yuan (US$820). Her father, Nie Bingguang, was sentenced to two years imprisonment with 2-year probation. Other relatives and neighbors involved also received prison sentences or fines.
Nie was diagnosed with uremia on July 14, 2012. Having not enough money for the treatment, she borrowed medical cards from her relatives and neighbors and bought forged medical records and invoices to obtain medical compensation.
Nie's brother and father took her to confess at a local police station after learning of her forging the invoices.
Nie, who is adopted, is currently out on medical parole.
