(ECNS) -- Taiwan is stepping up efforts to fingerprint foreigners at its ports and airports, according to the Hong Kong China News Agency on Tuesday.
The policy released by the region's immigration department on Sunday comes after British citizen Zain Dean fled Taiwan after being convicted of a fatal hit-and-run.
A pilot "biometric identification gate," which can collect fingerprints and capture facial features, has been installed at Kaohsiung International Airport. Starting from December 18, foreigners who enter Taiwan though that airport will be requested to leave their fingerprints.
A total of 400 biometric identification systems will be installed in ports and airports in Taiwan in September next year, according to the immigration department.
