(ECNS) –- Burglary suspects arrested in southern China's Guangdong province were forced to keep quiet with adhesive tape while in detention, Southern Metropolis Daily reported.

Chenjiang Police Station in Huizhou city of Guangdong province on Saturday arrested 23 people from a burglary gang involved in more than 100 burglaries.

The suspects were kept in two narrow detention rooms in the station, and some had their mouths covered with tape.

A police officer said they taped their mouths to prevent collusion, as all the suspects from Wong'an county, Guizhou province, speak their own dialect.

Zou Chaogui, a local lawyer, said the police action was not illegal, but there might be other ways to prevent collusion.
