Street vendors melt around 'pretty lady' chengguan

(ECNS) -- An attractive chengguan, or urban management officer, in southwest China has won over local street vendors with her sweet smile and mild manners, the Sichuan-based China West City Daily said on Sunday.

Chengguan are not known for their smiles or manners, and recent controversies have sprung up over their violent and abusive tendencies.

But a street merchant in Anyue county of Ziyang city, Sichuan, posted on an online forum Saturday that many street vendors surrender easily to the "pretty lady" chengguan. "She smiles, then we all follow what she says."

That pretty chengguan has a name: Xiong Chaorong, who has worked the area since June.

"I used to be a primary school teacher and I know that smiling is effective," said Xiong, adding: "Smiles show more respect."
