(ECNS) -- In the midst of soured doctor-patient relationships in China, Zhongshan Hospital in Shanghai will hire a taekwondo master to teach its medical staff self–defense skills to help protect themselves in case of attacks. The move has been applauded by netizens.
The hospital has announced that it will invite a 4th-degree black belt in taekwondo from the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) to teach self-defense skills to doctors.
"The training program is part of a cultural activity organized by the labor union of the hospital," said a union official.
It's not the first time that the hospital opened a self-defense program for its doctors, said the official, adding, "The program became a hit online after a spate of violent attacks in hospitals by knife-wielding patients."
"It's a pity for a doctor to use his or her limited time and energy to acquire self-defense skills," said one netizen.
"Please don't deify the ability of a doctor! It's impossible for doctors to save every patient."
The first lesson will be given on Tuesday in the auditorium of the hospital.
"Doctors at the hospital have been looking forward to the opening of the program," the official added.
