(ECNS)-- Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe announced on Wednesday that he would invite Chinese student Yan Jun, who saved a drowning Japanese boy in Osaka in September, to visit the prime minister's office in mid November to receive a letter of appreciation.

Yan, 26, has been widely praised for rescuing the teenager out of a local river when the powerful typhoon Man-yi swept through Osaka.

Yan found the schoolboy when he was taking a jog along the river, where the water level had increased due to overnight rains brought by the typhoon.

Yan jumped into the water and pulled out the drowning boy after several attempts to grab his hand. He eventually succeeded in the rescue about 100 meters downriver, returning to the embankment and using a rope provided by local residents.

Abe spoke of Yan's courageous behavior in disregarding his own safety and the danger involved, saying that his actions should be respected by the public.

As an exchange student, Yan Jun will enter a PhD program at a university in Osaka next year.
