(ECNS) -- Photos of male runners urinating against outside walls of the Palace Museum during the Beijing International Marathon on Sunday has caused a splash on Sina Weibo, a top Chinese microblog site.

"Obviously, the organizer didn't prepare enough toilets," said an amateur runner, "but peeing in public is also a fun experience."

More than 30,000 people participated in the race and about 15,000 ran the full distance. Experienced runners need about 2 hours to finish, while an amateur needs 4 to 5 hours. Those who pee in public included participants from home and abroad.

"In the official guidelines for the event, runners are advised to drink little water before competing," said a runner.

"It has already become a tradition for runners to pee in public during the Beijing International Marathon," said another participant.

On its Sina Weibo, CCTV commented that individuals should mind their behavior in public, and that the marathon's organizer should reflect on its lack of preparation.

Tadese Tola of Ethiopia broke the event's record set 27 years ago, winning the men's race before the city's sanitation department moved in to clean the soiled streets.
