(ECNS) -- A senior villager in South China's Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region cut out a part of his "bad" intestines himself and died after losing too much blood, a local news website said.
The man, surnamed Wei, 79, from a village in Pingguo county, has been suffering from cancer, and he cut his belly open with a knife to examined his intestines last Saturday.
Teng, a member of the medical staff, said they arrived following a 120-call by Wei's family, and found a 20-centimeter cut on the belly of the man lying on the floor, with blood soaking through a quilt. Intestines were pulled outside of his body and some parts were missing, he said.
"It is the cruelest scene I ever saw in my life," Teng added.
Wei, who was still conscious, refused to go to the hospital for an operation, and died not long after.
Wei's son said his father operated on himself about 5:00 am in the bathroom and was found by the family an hour later.
"Wei had a terrible stomachache and then cut his belly open to check what.s wrong with his intestines," Teng said. "A part that he thought was bad had been cut out and dumped in the sewer pipe."
Wei's son denied that they could not afford hospital bills, saying that his father was hospitalized for treatment before, staying 10 days at one hospital in Nanning city and three months at two in Pingguo county.
The local government said Wei did this out of desperation and not wanting to burden his children.
