Shanghai(CNS) -- COSCO Shipyard Group, a subsidiary of the China Ocean Shipping Company, will refurbish the Queen Elizabeth 2, a world famous luxury cruise liner, and change it into a luxury floating hotel.

It is the first time for a Chinese shipping company to contract a revitalization project on a luxury cruise ship.

The liner, often simply referred to as QE2, will depart from Dubai and arrive at the COSCO Shipyard facility in Zhoushan, Zhejiang province.

The QE2 has hosted kings, queens, presidents, prime ministers and celebrities throughout its legendary 40-year history

COSCO will be responsible for all the technical repairs and coordinate with an appointed interior renovation contractor to revamp the accommodation and ballroom.

The existing 990 staterooms onboard the ship will be converted into 450 premium all-suites.

QE2 is an ocean liner built for the Cunard Line, which was operated as both a transatlantic liner and a cruise ship from 1969 to 2008.

QE2 retired from active Cunard service in November 2008. The ship was acquired by a subsidiary of Dubai World, which planned to begin conversion of the vessel into a floating hotel moored at the Palm Jumeirah, Dubai. However, the plan was put on hold by the company due to the global financial crisis.
