Netizens dub 19-story building in E China the 'axe'

(ECNS) -- An office building in Nanjing, east China's Jiangsu province, has gone viral online and earned the name "axe building" among netizens due to its special architecture.

Located at the city's Yincheng Square on Jiangdongbei Road, the 19-story building narrows to a sharp wedge on its north side, which netizens say resembles an axe.

At its narrowest point the building is only a few centimeters wide, creating a series of triangular rooms.

The building was designed by Nanjing City-Town Architecture Design and Consultants Company in 2006.

"The reason why the exterior of the building has been designed irregularly is that we want to reduce the floor area of the structure," said an official from the company.
